Causes of visual impairment in Kingdom of Bahrain by Dr. Nada Al Yousuf

A study conducted by Dr Nada Al-Yousuf and co-workers examining the causes of visual disability among the visually disable in Bahrain revealed that Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause, followed by glaucoma. Dr Al-Yousuf advises all diabetic patients to undergo routine eye examination to check for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. This ensures that diabetic retinopathy gets diagnosed in its early stages and yet helps to prevent complications that lead to visual impairment. Moreover, Dr Al-Yousuf advises adults with a positive family history of glaucoma to undergo regular screening tests, namely checking the eye pressure and examining the optic nerves. This is to diagnose glaucoma early and to prevent complications that lead to visual disability. Participated in the study Dr Haneen Al Aali, Dr Hassan Ibrahim and Dr Khatoon Ali.
